About Jennifer Nelson, PhD

I am a Registered Psychotherapist, trained at the Toronto Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis, working with adult clients in my West Toronto office and online.

My professional path began in sociology — exploring how people’s stories are shaped by social, cultural, and historical contexts. I completed my PhD at the University of Toronto, studying the destruction of the community of Africville, Nova Scotia.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in research and consulting with Sunnybrook and Women’s College Hospital, the University of Toronto, and various government and nonprofit organizations, focusing on cancer care, equity, and mental health.

I believe our personal experiences cannot be separated from the societies and histories we live within. This awareness shapes how I listen: with curiosity, empathy, and attention to both the visible and unseen influences in your emotional and relational life.

I offer a warm, supportive space in which we thoughtfully and safely explore your concerns.
